Shopping

Typical shops and boutiques

On Corso Umberto I, just 100m from the hotel, guests will find numerous shops selling national and international labels and jewellers selling handmade gold and silver products and antiques. During the summer period shops are open until late evening, sometimes up until 10pm. Many shops are also open on Sundays. Local craftsmanship centres on woodwork, ironwork, ceramics and embroidery.

For crafts fans, many shops offer typical Sicilian produce such as Caltagirone ceramics, wrought iron objects and marble inlay. Some shops sell beautiful furniture and objects for the home in beautiful hard-stone and marble inlay, created using age-old techniques. After having decided on a design (for the most part representing nature), the base for the marble is chosen. On this the design is traced and the stones for the inlay are applied.

Markets and Festivals

During the summer period a market where culinary and crafts goods can be bought is held in the Piazza del Carmine close to the Cathedral.

Festa della Madonna della Rocca – September

The statue of the Madonna of the Stronghold is to be found in a sanctuary located between Taormina and Castelmola. During the second weekend in September a religious procession carries the statue from the sanctuary to the town where a big banquet featuring spiced lamb cooked in a wood oven is held. Of the Feasts and festivals that take place periodically in Taormina the Festival of Sicilian Costumes and Carts (May), the St. Pancrazio feast day (every 4 years in July) and the Carnival (February) are of particular note.
