For the adventurous, no visit to Sicily is complete without a trip to Mount Etna, the largest volcano in Europe and one of the most beautiful in the world. Its 400 craters, scattered across the upper slopes, offer an incredible chance to see lava flows close by.
On a tailor-made tour, you will be driven through some of the Sicilian villages bravely perched on the volcano’s lower slopes and to the majestic Alcantara Gorge, a deep canyon formed long ago by molten lava flows and now home to a number of magnificent waterfalls.
The views across the volcanic slopes are breathtaking, the fertile ground covered with lemon and almond trees, olive groves and grapevines. You can visit local farms to try the wines, honey, almond pastries and olive oils produced from Etna’s bounty.
The more athletic may wish to climb higher up the mountain to explore some of the 400 or so craters and don helmets to explore atmospheric lava caverns such as the “Grotta dei Ladroni” (literally Thieves’ Cave).
